The First Long-Distance Quantum Repeater

Researchers at the University of Innsbruck have made a significant breakthrough in the field of quantum communication by building the first long-distance quantum repeater node for telecommunication networks. This achievement is based on a proposal made by theoretical physicists at the same university a quarter of a century ago. The quantum repeater node, which consists of two calcium ions within an optical resonator, enables the creation of entanglement with photons at the standard frequency of telecommunications networks and performs entanglement swapping operations. The researchers successfully transmitted quantum information over a 50-kilometer-long optical fiber, positioning the quantum repeater node halfway between the starting and endpoints. These findings pave the way for building a global quantum information network, allowing tap-proof communication and high-performance distributed sensor networks.


The recent advancement has significant implications for the quantum computing industry. The ability to transmit quantum information over long distances using quantum repeaters addresses a major challenge in quantum communication: photon loss. By mitigating the loss of photons, this breakthrough brings us closer to realizing the potential of the quantum internet. The successful transmission of quantum information over tens of kilometers demonstrates the feasibility of long-distance quantum communication and sets the stage for further improvements. The researchers also outlined the necessary enhancements to enable transmission over 800 kilometers, connecting Innsbruck to Vienna. As efforts to build the quantum internet progress, this achievement marks a paramount milestone and opens up new possibilities for secure and efficient quantum communication on a global scale. The development of a worldwide quantum information network is now within reach, promising transformative advancements in various fields that rely on secure and high-speed data transfer.
